چکیده

OS resource management policies traditionally employ buffering to “smooth out” fluctuations in resource demand. By minimizing the length of idle periods and the level of contention during non-idle periods, such smoothing tends to maximize overall throughput and minimize the latency of individual requests. For certain important devices, however (disks, network interfaces, or even computational elements), smoothing eliminates opportunities to save energy using low-power modes. As devices with such modes proliferate, and as energy efficiency becomes an increasingly important design consideration, we argue that OS policies should be redesigned to increase burstiness for energy-

On the Effect of Processing Energy on Multiple Access Channels∗

Energy efficiency is an important issue in mobile wireless networks since the battery life of mobile terminals is limited. We are considering, besides the energy consumed for transmission, the energy consumed by being in the ‘on’ state, which we term ‘processing energy’. This energy constitutes a considerable fraction of the total energy available to battery-limited wireless devices, hence it i...

Energy Conservation for Real-Time Disk Systems with I/O Burstiness

Energy conservation has become a critical problem for real-time embedded storage systems. Although a variety of approaches to reducing energy consumption has been extensively studied, energy conservation for real-time embedded storage systems is still an open problem. In this paper, we propose an energy management strategy (IBEC) using I/O burstiness for real time embedded storage systems. Our ...

On The Spatiotemporal Burstiness of Terms

Thousands of documents are made available to the users via the web on a daily basis. One of the most extensively studied problems in the context of such document streams is burst identification. Given a term t, a burst is generally exhibited when an unusually high frequency is observed for t. While spatial and temporal burstiness have been studied individually in the past, our work is the first...

Impact of Cross Traffic Burstiness on the Packet-scale Paradigm — An Extended Analysis

The packet-scale paradigm is a novel framework for achieving ultra-high speed congestion control. Due to its reliance on finely-controlled inter-packet gaps, the paradigm is expected to be sensitive to transient burstiness in traffic encountered on bottleneck links. This paper uses a first-principles approach to study the impact of cross traffic burstiness on the efficiency of the packet-scale ...

The Burstiness Behavior of Regulated Flows in Networks

In this paper we study the impact of statistical multiplexing on leaky-bucket regulated traffic streams as they pass through the network. In particular we show that the burstiness of a flow is randomized as it transits through the nodes with mean equal to its initial burstiness value at the ingress. We then show that the random burstiness for a single flow converges to a constant equal to the i...
